The goal of our Specialty Series is to provide medical students early exposure to the different specialties and subspecialties, alongside their specific clinical challenges and new treatment advancements. By hosting keynote lectures and educational interviews, important information and experiences about the professions will be discussed in-depth.

Dr Rebecca White.png

Dr. Rebekah White, MD, is a general surgeon and surgical oncologist who specializes in treating tumors of the pancreas, live, bile duct, and upper gastrointestinal tract such as the stomach.

Dr. White is part of the gastrointestinal cancer unit at UC San Diego Health's Moores Cancer Center, where she works alongside a multidisciplinary team to provide cancer patients with advanced surgical options that are best suited to their individual needs.

Among the procedures she performs are irreversible electroporation (IRE) for pancreatic cancer; Whipple procedure (pancreaticoduodenectomy); laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy and enucleation; pancreas-preserving ampullary and duodenal tumor resection; minimally invasive liver resection; drainage/debridement for chronic pancreatitis; and gallbladder and bile duct tumor resection.

Dr Catherine McDougall is an orthopaedic surgeon with a particular interest in hip and knee surgery, joint replacement of the hip and knees, and orthopaedics in the elderly.

After training and working as a physiotherapist for some years, Catherine decided to pursue her interest in orthopaedic medicine by returning to university to study medicine.

Graduating with a Bachelor of Medicine, and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Queensland in 2006, she concluded her orthopaedics surgical training to become a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2014. She went on to complete a fellowship in knee surgery on the Gold Coast, before travelling to Edinburgh to undertake a further Fellowship in knee and hip and revision arthroplasty.

As well as consulting at hospitals across Brisbane, Catherine also holds an appointment as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland and is a Special Reservist with the Australian Defence Force.

Event Highlights

Our general surgery seminar is focused on highlighting our speaker's pathway towards becoming a surgeon, what it is like to have a career in the field of surgery, their research work if relevant, and highlights/challenges of their career.
We will be featuring a zoom seminar for 1 hours involving 3 keynote speakers from Canada, the US and Australia who will be highlighting their unique perspective on the field of surgery, with a Q&A period to follow.
